Chiropractic Care for Arthritis

Arthritis is the body’s response to increased force or stress in an area. Degenerative arthritis is not a disease or a pathology, it is rather an adaptation… If there is an area in the body that has more force on it for whatever reason, the body recognizes that force and responds by laying down new bone to strengthen that area of increased force.

We have hundreds of people that come to see us at Align to maintain the body’s structure and function so as to prevent and slow down the degenerative process.

Let’s say someone has a RIGHT shoulder that is lower than the left. Go ahead and tilt your body in this direction so that you can understand better. If body is tilted to the RIGHT and RIGHT shoulder is lower than the left it is obvious that there is more pressure or compression taking place on the right side of the body than the left. The left side in turn is being stretched due to this tilt in the shoulders and upper back. Being that the right side has more pressure, over time the body will recognize the increased force on the right side and will begin to lay down new bone on the RIGHT side to strengthen it so it can withstand the increased force. The arthritis will progress as long as the increased pressure remains on that right side.

Eventually, if cause (tilt) is not corrected it will lead to a degenerative fusion, meaning that the arthritis is so substantial than it is now connected with the vertebrae above and below. Once fusion has taken place there is now no more mobility between those segments. The biggest problem with a fusion is that now the joints above and below the fusion have to work harder due to the lost motion in the fused segments. They are not working harder and taking on more force, so then what happens? They degenerate faster and develop arthritis far faster than they should due to the fusion at the other segments. This is the reason why it is so incredibly common for individuals that have surgical fusions to have to have more than one. When one area stops moving, the joints above and below have to work harder and they will wear out faster every single time.

This exact same phenomenon can take place in the knees, hips, shoulders, spine and any other functional joint within the body. If biomechanics are changed or forces are asymmetrical, one side will wear out faster than the other. Contact us to see if we can help you with relief from symptoms of arthritis!
