Breech Baby

Chiropractic Support for a Breech Baby

A breech presentation refers to the position of the baby in-utero. It is normal, up to the seventh month of the pregnancy for the baby to be head-up or in the breech position. After the seventh month, any position other than head-down may not only challenge the birth process but put stressors on the developing baby.

Breech Baby Chiropractic Care

The use of Webster technique through chiropractic care may help with baby’s positioning. The Webster technique, as defined by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), is “a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nervous system and balances the pelvic muscles and ligaments. This in turn may reduce the tension in the mother’s pelvic muscles and ligaments and contribute to optimal fetal positioning in preparation for birth.”

Currently, the medical field does not have a truly effective way of turning a breech baby. If a baby is still presenting breech in the last few weeks of pregnancy, a C-section is typically scheduled. C-sections have shown to have their own risks and complications. The ICPA recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to create pelvic neuro-biomechanical function, so even when a baby presents head-down, chiropractic care with Webster technique can optimize the overall function of the pelvis.
