Bedwetting

Address Bedwetting with Corrective Chiropractic

Bedwetting can be extremely stressful for children and parents. Embarrassment, alarms, no sleepovers, plastic mattress covers, frustration, unable to fit in, even diapers or medications. By the age of four or five, most children have good bladder control at night time. If there is an inability to stay dry at night there may be a sign of an underlying problem.

Chiropractic Care for Bedwetting

While chiropractic adjustments are not a treatment for bedwetting, countless children have been helped through safe and natural chiropractic care. There are two main muscles that control the emptying of the bladder. Nerves exit the spinal column in the lower back and sacrum to control these muscles. The sacrum is made up of five small bones and as they fuse when we get older, then can become misaligned. These misalignments (or subluxations) can cause stress to the nerves and thus in turn cause the communication from the brain to the muscles of the bladder to not function optimally.

When a child’s misalignments are reduced with chiropractic adjustments, bladder function may often be restored. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics tested a group of 46 children that received chiropractic care over a 10 week period. A quarter of those receiving chiropractic care had 50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency, while the control group saw no reduction. (JMPT 1994 (Nov-Dec); 17 (9):596-600).

Since chiropractic care is not a treatment for bedwetting, a thorough examination is recommended. If your child’s bedwetting is being caused by nerve interference from the spine, many children will see great improvements under our chiropractic care. Contact us to learn more!
