Headaches & Migraines

Headache and Migraine Treatment with Corrective Chiropractic

Headaches and Migraines are EXTREMELY COMMON, but they are NOT NORMAL.

At Align Health & Wellness we have had amazing success treating people that have struggled with tension headaches for just a couple weeks to people that have suffered with migraines for over 5 decades.

"I have been a member at Align Health & Wellness since October 2016. Before I came to Align, I was having chronic migraines & headaches almost daily. Since coming to Align, I have had 2 migraines in 7 months. That is so huge for me and helps me function through everyday things that I couldn't make it through before. Everyone at Align Health & Wellness truly cares about you and your health and makes sure you also understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. It's so different from any other chiropractor I have been to because they have my x-rays in front of them each time I get adjusted so that I am being adjusted specifically.” – Taylor

Our #1 Goal: determine what is actually causing your headaches and/or migraines.

It is far too common today that when someone is experiencing headache symptoms we immediately jump to treating the symptom, the pain. We start taking drugs to suppress the symptoms and cover up the pain rather than stepping back and asking…why am I having these headaches?

If you were driving your car and the check engine light started flashing, would you take a sticker and place it over the tiny light that is flashing to cover up the warning light? What would happen to your car if you did? Warning lights are equivalent to symptoms/pain in our body telling us that something is wrong.

Imagine if you are experiencing headaches and/or migraines right now and there is an actual problem inside. If you just treat the symptoms, does the problem go away? Typically not. The scariest part is not the pain right now, but rather if there truly is an internal problem and it is ignored (check engine light), what that will lead to down the road.

What causes migraines?

Migraines are most commonly caused when the brainstem is interfered with. When this takes place, the cranial nerves (specifically Trigeminal Nerve) and the neurovascular system to the brain are affected. More and more we are finding that the primary cause of brainstem interference is a structural interference at the top of the neck. Watch the video below for this explanation looking at x-rays:

What causes headaches?

There are many difference types of headaches including but not limited to tension, chronic daily headaches, sex headaches, exercise headaches, cough headaches, cluster headaches, stress headaches, etc. Regardless of the type of headaches or symptoms you are having, the most important thing is determining cause. If cause is corrected, the symptoms go away – it is that simple.

Tension headaches are extremely common in our society today. Tension headaches are caused by trapezius muscles that are tight which in turn causes tension to be produced in the muscles on the back of the neck. These muscles then pull on the base of the skull and cause a headache that wraps from the base of the skull, up and around the top of the head to the eyebrows. People often ask the question…how do I get these muscles to relax? When the more important question is yet one more step deeper…Why are the muscles tight in the first place? Is the head jutting forward causing the muscles at the base of the neck to work so incredibly hard that they are tight all the time? What is the cause…?

How has Align had so much success treating people with Headaches and Migraines?

As Corrective Chiropractors at Align, we look for a specific cause of headaches and migraines: bad posture and abnormal structure. The most common cause we find is a structural misalignment at the base of the skull or in the neck. When the structure is not in correct alignment it causes primarily 2 things:

  1. Affects the neurovascular system and inhibits the body’s ability to heal and regulate.
  2. Changes the biomechanics of how our body moves and functions…the problem with abnormal biomechanics is that it causes the body to wear out faster than if things were functioning properly.

How do I know if I have a structural problem causing my headaches / migraines?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know if you have heart disease without getting checked by a professional. In the same way, you need to get checked by a corrective chiropractor to see if there are structural abnormalities in the body causing the headaches or migraines you may be experiencing.

Simple things that may indicate structural abnormalities:

  • Poor posture
  • Hump on base of neck (dowager’s hump)
  • Head jutting forward (forward head posture)
  • Decreased range of motion in neck
  • More range of motion in one direction over the other
  • Tight muscles compensating for abnormal posture/structure
  • One shoulder lower than another
  • When looking at pictures of yourself in your phone noticing that your head is always tilted in the same direction
